'Twilight'
Oil on canvas, 30" x 40"
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Purchase Prize
Xavier Gonzalez was the nephew of Jose Arpa and came to San Antonio in the 1920's to assist his uncle as an art instructor. Of all the works in the Davis Collection, Twilight is probably the most powerful. The figures' heads are bowed and it is up to the viewer to determine if in prayer or despair. The theme of cotton picking becomes trivial next to the power of the image and the spiritual overtones portrayed in this work. -RC
