'Texas Night Riders'
Oil on canvas, 35" x 40"
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Fourth prize, Group 2: Ranch Life
The painting Texas Night Riders by Johnson is one of the most dramatic in the collection and is a rarely seen night view of Texas ranch life. Johnson, like Dunton, paints in the tradition of Remmington and illustrates ranch life from the point of view of the traditional cowboy. This painting is particularly striking because of the overall green tonality and the wonderful starlit sky. -RC
