'Mexican Heather and Salt Cedar'
Oil on canvas, 30" x 35"
1928 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded First prize, Group 4: Texas Wildflowers
In Mexican Heather and Salt Cedar, Morgan takes the viewer to another part of Texas - The Gulf Coast. The artist chose a pastel palette to depict the expanse of heather, while a solitary clump of salt cedar balances the distant seascape and sun drenched sky. Unlike many painting in the collection, the artist chose to portray the atmosphere as a hazy screen through which the flowers and forms emerge. There is little detail in this work, unlike many of the other landscapes, and the piece is in sharp contrast to the atmospheric clarity of Arpa's and Nicols's works. -RC
