From whiskers to wonder, this workshop will help you turn simple cat doodles into expressive portraits. Using charcoal and watercolor crayons, we'll focus on capturing personality rather than perfection. Practice drawing cat faces from doodling to using various means to create facial proportions. The final pictures will be freehand drawings in charcoal on 5x7" to 8x8" watercolor paper. We will use watercolor crayons to add color while keeping a more painterly effect.

Mary's animal portraits are best-sellers in our Art League Small Works Gallery! This is her story:My love of art began in high school and continued through college, where I majored in art. Although I chose a career in teaching, creativity remained an important part of my life. During the pandemic, I rediscovered painting through Smithsonian online courses in Impressionism. Putting brush to paper again felt like coming home, and the spark returned. Now retired, I paint several days a week, focusing primarily on animals. Their expressions, textures, and personalities make them fascinating subjects. I especially enjoy watercolor, where the movement of water and color creates unexpected moments of light and life. I hope that sense of joy and discovery is reflected in the paintings you see here. |
FROM YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Please bring printed photos of your cats. It is very difficult to work from your phone, but it's a good reference for colors. You can bring your own watercolor crayons and, if you want, some regular watercolors. Watercolor brushes are small to medium round, plus a script liner. For final touches, you can bring some fine waterproof black and white pens or your own India ink and PH Martin's Bleedproof white. I will provide 100% cotton, 140 lb, cold press watercolor paper. The sizes range from 5 x7" to 8x8" If you wish to try other paper, please bring it along.
