cordially invite you to an invitational celebration
honoring our Ethel B. Drought Award Art Patrons of 2026
We are proud to celebrate the contributions of this year’s honorees, Dr. William J. Chiego, and his wife Liz, whose enduring commitment to the arts has left a lasting mark on San Antonio. Reserve Your Place
For more than thirty-five years, the Chiegos have played a vital role in the city’s cultural life.
Bill’s twenty-five-year tenure as director of the McNay Art Museum coincided with Liz’s dedicated service as a docent, together helping guide a period of remarkable growth in the museum’s collection, facilities, and educational programs.
Bill holds degrees in art history from the University of Virginia and Case Western Reserve University, where Liz also studied before pursuing library science. The couple married in Paris while Bill completed his doctoral research and Liz studied at the École du Louvre.
Bill’s curatorial career included leadership roles at major museums across the country before his appointment as the McNay’s second director in 1991. Under his leadership, the museum expanded significantly, including the addition of the Stieren Center for Exhibitions and a collection that grew to over 20,000 works.
Beyond the museum, Liz and Bill have supported organizations such as Say Sí, Communities In Schools, and the Masters Leadership Program, continuing to enrich San Antonio’s artistic and educational community.
Their generosity also extends directly to the San Antonio Art League + Museum, where their support helps sustain its mission and strengthen its role as a vital part of the city’s cultural landscape.
