Pocket Sketching Foundations Class
with certified instructor, Mary Kaye Sawyer-Morse
Learn enough to play for a lifetime!

This quick-draw technique anyone can learn is perfect for hiking, biking, sauntering, or just sitting in a café. Capture what you think you see in 25 minutes or less using a water-soluble pen, a 4 x 6-inch pad of paper and a small watercolor paint set. Ideal for the timid beginner to paint fearlessly in public, and the advanced artist who wants minimal equipment, total portability, speed, no interruptions, and no clean-up.

Escape into meditation while sketching!

About Mary Kaye:
My art journey began as a teenager as I explored various mediums – especially pastels - and received my first commission at age 16. Early formal training includes an Associate of Arts degree as an art major. Over the years I have been privileged to study with several prominent pastel masters including Albert Handell, Clive Tyler, Teresa Saia and Tobi Clement.  My work now encompasses the mediums of pastel, watercolor, and gouache. My paintings are known for an expressive use of radiant and rich color.

Materials
*If you have taken a Pocket Sketching ™ workshop in the past, bring your materials with you!

*Haven’t taken a Pocket Sketching ™ workshop before and want to bring your own materials? Here’s the list:

-Strathmore Drawing Pad 4 x 6 (please do NOT bring a larger size; this is sketching not painting).

-Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint set of 14 half pans (or a similar compact/travel set; please do NOT bring a large palette.  This is sketching not painting!)

-Pilot Razor Point Fine line Marker Ultra-fine Point (0.3mm or similar) BLACK ink

-#6 round brush and ¼ or ½ inch flat brush

*Prefer to make it easy? For those who want to purchase a supply kit for the workshop, it will be available at the time of the workshop for $35.00 (payable by check or cash to the instructor).  The kit includes a small brush.  You may wish to bring in addition, your own #6 round and a ¼ or ½ inch flat brush.
All other workshop materials and workshop handouts will be supplied by instructor.

Learn and use:
 • Speed - to avoid multiple focal points, excessive detail, ruining freshness
 • Characteristics of the water-soluble pen which allows the range of value
• Being invisible and undisturbed when working in the middle of public places
• Visual editing, on location, to get the essential quality of what you think you see (not necessarily what is there)
 • Individual, encouraging critique sessions, demonstrations, and hands-on help

Agenda Noon - 4:00pm
Session 1
Pocket Sketching Technique-The Perspective of Contrast Emphasis on techniques for sketching with the water-soluble pen. You will learn all about the portable palette. The first landscape contrast painting with the pen will be introduced. You will complete a sketch with both distance and foothills.
Session 2
Pocket Sketching Technique-The Perspective of Color Emphasis using color and the pen to create a landscape from a photo reference. This involves advanced watercolor and requires no previous experience! The perspective lessons of contrast and color are included.
Session 3
Pocket Sketching Technique-Brush technique and color use will continue with an easy lesson applying technique with a floral focus.
Session 4
Pocket Sketching- This session introduces the technique of scraping and its application with a landscape.  We will sketch outdoors if weather allows.
Session 5
Pocket Sketching and combining components to ‘build’ a scene. This fun exercise helps build skills to sketch fearlessly anywhere.
