The Bylaws of the Art League have changed numerous times over the past century to suit the times. This revision does, among other things, remove the eight Vice President elected offices of various events and convert those to Committee Chairs. Another revision, which will take place in June of 2024, is a five dollar increase in individual membership. All other membership levels remain the same. If you have questions about any of these changes, feel free to email Dr. Bill Kurtin, SAALM Treasurer and Bylaws Committee Chair.
Board-Approved Bylaws Revisions sent to the SAALM Membership for review and vote on October 22
Goals of Proposed Reorganization
To redefine some officer positions based on current practices.
To clarify the responsibilities of officers and committee chairpersons.
To improve communication within the administrative structure.
To simplify decision-making processes for Board actions.
Officers and Executive Committee
The number of officer positions will be modified as follows:
The Vice President positions for Artist of the Year, Art Patron, Juried Exhibition, Hospitality, and Membership will be converted to Committee Chair positions.
A new First Vice President position will be created.
A new Vice President for Development position will be created.
The net effect would reduce the number of elected officer positions from 8 to 5. The elected officers (President, First VP, VP for Development, Secretary, Treasurer) would constitute the Executive Committee.
Rationale: Most non-profit organizations have a president and one or two vice presidents who are elected as leaders in the operational and policy-making activities for their term. The current structure at SAALM with multiple vice presidents, most of whom are responsible for the supervision of one activity during the year, is unusual.
Standing Committees
The following current standing committees will be incorporated into other committees or eliminated as follows:
Acquisitions and Collection/Conservation become part of new Collections Committee
Webmaster and Social Media become part of new Marketing Committee
Sculpture Garden becomes part of Buildings and Grounds Committee
A new committee, Concepts and Community, will be added.
Archives, By-Laws, Installation, and Mailing committees will be eliminated.
The net effect would reduce the number of standing committees from 17 to 16. The new structure better reflects the way the art league currently operates.
Proposed Committees (Each with a Chairperson)
Artist of the Year, Art Patron, Buildings and Grounds, Collections, Concepts and Community, Docents, Education, Historian, Hospitality, Invitational Exhibit, Juried Exhibition
Marketing, Members Gallery, Membership, Programs, Small Works Gallery
