Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the beeswax and varnish to fusing the layers of wax. Encaustic medium consists of natural bees wax and damar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium, or purchased pre-colored with traditional artist pigments.
Want to learn more about Encaustic as an art medium?

The International Encaustic Artists annual juried exhibition will be hosted by the San Antonio Art League and Museum in June of 2023. The theme of the all-encaustic exhibit is Wax and Wildflowers, a tribute to the fabled Davis Wildflower Competition of 1929 when wealthy oilman Edgar B. Davis asked the Art League to put out a call to artists all over the world to paint Texas wildflowers.
Almost a century later, the call for Wax and Wildflowers invited national, international, and regional encaustic artists to interpret this same theme of wildflowers using the medium of encaustic wax. Artists interpreted the theme using wax in any way they wanted - as a call for sustainable plantings, as a metaphor for uncultivated nature, as an abstract concept, as ecoprints with wax, or any other creative variation on the wildflower theme. 50 pieces from 38 artists were selected for the exhibition.

To celebrate this unique exhibit, the SAALM Small Works Gift Shop will be featuring small encaustic works and wildflower paintings that reflect the theme of the show.
AND there will be demonstrations and workshops about encaustic art that will give you a first-hand chance to see it and try it for yourself. It's going to be a Wax and Wildflower summer at SAALM! ADMISSION IS ALWAYS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. |
