INTRODUCTION by Dr. Mary Beth Swofford, University of the Incarnate Word
2020 has been a year of change and loss. Changes in educational delivery have disrupted how educators and students study, learn, and practice their art; an extremely stressful time for both students and faculty. Professors are anxious and burned out. They’ve been pivoting between on-line and in-person instruction. They’ve been juggling work and childcare. They’ve been worried — about Covid-19, the economy, social justice, isolation from colleagues, and the physical health and well-being of students who are often also juggling jobs, schoolwork, and family obligations. In light of these circumstances, SAALM made the decision to cancel this year’s Collegiate Exhibit. We understand the disappoint for students and faculty and shall bring back this showcase of collegiate art in the Spring of 2022. In addition to disruptions in education, beloved artist, educator, and Art League icon Eloise Yantis Stoker died on Sunday, August 9, 2020. Eloise served as a board member of the San Antonio Art League and Museum and more importantly, she created the annual Collegiate Exhibits through the San Antonio Art League and Museum now in their 17th year. |
In honor of her many years of service to arts education, the SAALM board of directors established the Eloise Yantis Stoker Award for the best in show of the Collegiate Exhibit. The award will be presented at the 2022 Collegiate Exhibit.
As a way to honor the tireless work of art educators, we invited university and college faculty to submit works that display their personal approaches to art as expression. The works encompass painting, sculpture, photography, weaving, and mixed media; each an articulation of the artist’s views on culture, spirituality, psychology, community, and discovery.
With gratitude, and great pleasure and pride in our arts community we present the SAALM Invitational College and University Faculty Exhibit for 2021.
