As a San Antonio Art League Museum docent, your responsibilities include engaging visitors to SAALM and ensuring a rewarding experience for all guests. Your duties involve researching and learning about SAALM’s history, art, and other relevant subjects of the museum, and being punctual and committed to the legacy of the oldest art museum in San Antonio. You give an engaging welcome and offer information to educate a diverse public and ensure their enjoyment of the San Antonio Art League Museum and its exhibitions. You relate to people of all ages and backgrounds and cultivate their enthusiasm for the Museum and its unique place in the San Antonio Arts community.
In return, you meet people from all over the world and collect interesting stories about who they are and where they come from. You work as an honored volunteer at a converted venerable mansion in the lovely King William Historic Art District. Our docents enjoy free secure parking on the grounds as well as access to our kitchen, office areas, and theSemmes Studio. Many docents enjoy working with a friend or partner. That is encouraged! And as a SAALM Docent, you are never short of lively anecdotes about the diverse visitors who come through the doors to see the architecture, the exhibits, and the historic Davis Collection.

To really get involved with the Art League – become a docent! Better yet, invite your spouse or partner to become a docent, too. The two of you can spend a pleasant five-hour day, residing in a lovely historic house, getting to view the newest exhibits, welcoming visitors from in town, out-of-state, and out of the country; sharing history of the house and area and information about the artists; and selling works of art. When I drive up to the SAALM on my docent days, I feel a sense of wonder. The museum invites discovery by visitors and volunteers. Surrounded by the beauty of the art and history of the league, I feel a sense of intense community and appreciation for the opportunity to share the wealth of the experience with visitors, fellow docents, and League volunteers.

The best part of being a docent at SAALM is the chance to talk with our visitors about the current exhibit and, of course, the history behind the Davis Collection. Many of our visitors are tourists, so most are also interested in the King William District, and it's always great to have the walking tour brochure handy to give them a guide to the highlights of the area.
