James Ferdinand McCan: An Artist Rediscovered
The Witte Museum will open the exhibition James Ferdinand McCan: An Artist Rediscovered in May 2022.
Through his art, McCan captured in careful detail the people, the landscape, wildlife and livestock of Texas through observation of light and setting. Be inspired by his work and join us for Draw Closer to Nature: Plein Air Painting Workshop.
This workshop is part of the 2022 Conference on Texas: Changing Landscapes, May 15 – 17 at the Witte Museum. The Conference from May 16 – 17 includes topics such as: Texas Trailblazers Award Luncheon featuring Texan By Nature; Future of the Earth: Climate Ready Buildings; New Land Stewards: The Next Generation, Waterways, the Gulf and Migration; James Ferdinand McCan: Painting a Historical Portrait of Texas, 1895-1925; The Ocelot – Mascot for Habitat Change; Inspiring Outdoor Adventure; Wild Focus: Twenty-Five Years of Parks and Wildlife Photography; Solar Energy – Feeding the Grid; and, Texas Natural History – a Century of Change.
Draw Closer to Nature: Plein Aire Painting Workshop: Experience the joy of artmaking in the outdoors with the techniques of the early Texas masters
The Witte Museum and the San Antonio Art League are pleased to offer this unique opportunity to learn more about the art of James Ferdinand McCan first-hand! When McCan lived in the Hill Country, he spent time painting along the Guadalupe River, as well as the Llano and Medina Rivers. In pastel, he rendered beautiful still lifes and studies. He often painted in the company of Julian Onderdonk.

You can experience the same delight in observing nature in this one-time workshop taught by Vikki Fields, acclaimed painter from life. Fields has spent decades capturing the light and landscapes of West Texas and beyond and will guide you in your own observations and techniques. This workshop is for all levels, including beginners.
