A roomful of history, open to researchers

For decades, SAAL+M's history lived in a downstairs closet. Board member Ilna Colemere changed that, turning a former upstairs kitchen into a research library that holds 140 years of the museum's story.

The collection spans press releases, board minutes, and yearbooks going back to 1912, alongside the original card catalog once used to research any topic in the museum's holdings. It also houses part of Edgar B. Davis's personal library — rare volumes from the 1880s through the 1920s, stamped with his name — along with small sculptures donated by artists, photographs charting the museum's various homes since its 1912 founding, and other artifacts tracing SAAL+M back to its first meeting at the Carnegie Library (now the Briscoe).

Researching a project? The library is open by appointment — just contact the museum to schedule a visit. In your contact form, please tell us the purpose of your research and a preferred date and time for your visit.
