A community teaching space for art

Tucked into the grounds of the San Antonio Art League + Museum, the Semmes Studio is a dedicated teaching space where the Museum's mission comes to life through hands-on creativity. While the Museum's galleries showcase finished works of art, the Semmes Studio is where new art gets made — a classroom space that hosts workshops, classes, and community art-making throughout the year.

Originally used for storage, the building was transformed into a proper classroom space in the late 1990s, and a generous grant from the Semmes Foundation in 2017 funded a full remodel — giving the space its current character as an accessible, welcoming studio equipped for a wide range of artistic mediums, from painting and drawing to collage, ceramics, and printmaking.

Throughout the year, the Semmes Studio buzzes with activity: seasonal workshops for adults, youth programs, poetry and creative writing sessions, and hands-on classes led by both Art League members and visiting guest instructors. Workshops are intentionally kept small and personal — typically limited to just eight to twelve participants — so visitors and community members alike can expect real one-on-one attention and a genuinely collaborative, all-levels-welcome environment. Whether you're a lifelong artist or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, the Semmes Studio offers a chance to step past the gallery walls and become part of San Antonio's living art tradition.
