Art at the San Antonio Art League & Museum doesn't stop at the gallery walls. Step outside, and the historic grounds surrounding our beautiful historic building become a garden of discovery in their own right. Throughout the property, sculpture and outdoor art invite visitors to slow down, wander, and experience creativity in the open air of the King William Historic District.
An evolving outdoor collection
The Sculpture Garden reflects SAAL+M's ongoing commitment to showcasing Texas artists in every medium — not just on canvas, but in stone, steel, and bronze. Works on the grounds have included pieces by celebrated local sculptors, and the collection continues to grow through artist donations, commissions, and community collaboration.
Among the notable additions to the grounds is Steelwood Symphony, a striking multi-panel steel screen installation along the property's southern boundary, created by San Antonio metal artist and past SAAL+M Artist of the Year James Wyatt Hendricks. Built in stages with support from the King William Association, it's one of several outdoor works that give the Sculpture Garden its distinct character.
A living, growing space
Much like our galleries inside, the Sculpture Garden is never static. New works are periodically added to the permanent collection, and the grounds themselves are lovingly cared for by SAAL+M volunteers, who help maintain plantings, walkways, and the overall beauty of the setting — ensuring the garden remains as inviting as the art it holds.
