89TH JURIED EXHIBITION OPENS AT SAN ANTONIO ART LEAGUE
63 selected pieces show diversity of message and media in state-wide art competition
One of the State’s oldest juried arts competitions opens on Sunday, April 14 with a reception from 3-5 P.M. at the San Antonio Art League & Museum’s gallery, 130 King William Street in the King William Historical District. More than $10,000 in awards will be presented to the winning artists at Sunday’s event, which is free and open to the public. The Exhibition will be on view until June 2, 2019.
A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the coveted Onderdonk Purchase Prize. That chosen artwork will added to the SAALM’s permanent collection. 20 awards in total will be announced at the reception. All awards are designated by the Exhibition Juror.
This year’s juror, Dr. Stephanie Fox Knappe, Curator at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, selected a total of 68 artworks from the 369 state-wide submission. About her selections, she said, “I attempted to consider what I intellectually know contributes to a strong piece—mastery of art’s formal elements such as line, shape, form, space, texture, value, color. I observe these components to assess and understand how an artist manipulates them, tells stories with them, makes magic from them, and brings something into being that did not previously exist.”
The current exhibition is the 89th open event of San Antonio Art League and Museum (SAALM) in its more than 106 years of establishment. It grew out of the fabled Edgar B. Davis Competitions of the late 1920s. Catalogs of the work will be available at the reception.
The San Antonio Art League & Museum is located at 130 King William Street across from King William Park. The museum is open to the public free of charge Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations are welcome. For more information call 210-223-1140 or visit www.saalm.org online.
