A Workshop with Sandy Whitby

Discover abstraction by noticing elements such as line, shape, color, texture, rhythm, contrast, and negative space in both artwork and the ordinary world, with the goal to experiment and discover.
This is an amazing opportunity to work with the SAAL+M 2026 Artist of the Year, acclaimed painter Sandy Whitby. She says, "We’ll take a walk-through of my exhibition — so we can discuss the elements that you see within some of the paintings.
"Noticing is such an important part of all artistic pursuits, so we’ll spend some time walking around the area looking for examples of found abstraction. The photos we take on our phones will be the inspiration for creating our own abstract compositions when we return to the studio.
"This workshop will be an introduction to how we can learn to see differently, use our intuition and play skills to create work that truly is an expression of who we are – mistakes and all. It’s time to learn to play again!"

Sandy Whitby
Sandy Whitby is a San Antonio–based abstract artist and the San Antonio Art League + Museum’s 2026 Artist of the Year. With a background in fine art, graphic design, and illustration, she creates bold, richly textured paintings shaped by color, movement, and intuitive composition. Her decades-long practice reflects a deep commitment to creative exploration and expressive freedom.

Three to five colors, plus black and white
Two or three brushes in different sizes

Painter’s tape
Smartphone or tablet
Apron or work shirt
