Ancient Technique, Timeless Beauty

Mar 6, 2027

What happens when an ordinary egg meets the magic of powdered pigment? Discover the answer in this engaging workshop devoted to the ancient art of egg tempera painting.

Discover the luminous beauty of egg tempera in this hands-on workshop exploring one of painting’s oldest and most durable media. Students will learn how to prepare egg yolk binder, mix powdered pigments, transfer an image to a panel, and build color through thin layers, hatching, glazing, and finishing techniques. Designed for beginners as well as artists curious about traditional methods, this class introduces the materials, surfaces, and step-by-step processes used to create richly detailed egg tempera paintings.

Class Note: Egg tempera is made with fresh egg yolk, so students will handle raw eggs during the workshop. If you are sensitive to the texture of raw eggs, have concerns about handling them, or have an egg allergy, please be aware that direct skin exposure will occur and is an essential part of this process.

Instructor

Dinah Coakley

Dinah was raised in San Antonio, Texas, where her love of making art began at home and grew through her community.

She studied art at San Antonio College and continued her training at the Southwest School of Art, focusing on printmaking. Dinah spent 20 years as an assistant printmaking instructor at the Southwest School of Art, and she also works at a local family-owned art supply store in San Antonio—something she loves because it keeps her connected to artists of all ages.

She recenlty taught the populart workshop on Gilding at the San Antonio Art League, and we are thrilled to welcome her back!
