Artist of the Year: An 80-Year Tradition of Excellence

Since 1946, the San Antonio Art League + Museum has honored one exceptional artist each year with its Artist of the Year award — one of the most prestigious distinctions a San Antonio artist can receive. Over eight decades, the honor has recognized painters, sculptors, fiber artists, photographers, and collage artists alike, reflecting the Art League's deep respect for the full breadth of contemporary artistic practice.

A Rigorous, Multi-Stage Selection Process

The SAAL+M Artist of the Year award is not a members-only honor — nominees may be any artist in the area, regardless of their affiliation with the Art League. The process begins each spring when a committee of San Antonio Art League members nominate area artists. Those artists submit samples of their work along with detailed information about their artistic practice, their background, and their contributions to the arts community.

From this initial pool, the committee narrows the field to three finalists. At that point, the process moves outside the Art League's own membership entirely: a panel of out-of-state jurors — chosen specifically to bring an unbiased, outside perspective — reviews the finalists' submissions and selects the year's winner. This layered process, which typically concludes with a selection in September, ensures that the honor reflects rigorous, independent evaluation rather than local favoritism.

A Celebration Months in the Making

The selected Artist of the Year is kept under wraps for several months, with the winner officially announced at the Art League's beloved annual Christmas party — a festive unveiling that has become a tradition in its own right among Art League members and supporters.

The following year, the honoree is celebrated with a solo exhibition at the Museum, typically opening in late summer, that runs for approximately three months. The Art League also produces a full exhibition catalog to accompany the show, ensuring that each Artist of the Year's body of work is documented and preserved. Past exhibitions have opened with public receptions in the Art League's King William gallery, giving visitors the chance to engage directly with the honoree and their creative process.

From nomination to exhibition, the Artist of the Year award represents nearly a year and a half of thoughtful evaluation and celebration — a testament to the Art League's ongoing commitment to recognize and elevate exceptional artistic talent in our community.
